When opposites attract

Often in a couple it’s not just the HIV status that is different. Having different ways of dealing with life can be part of the attraction – and part of the problem.

In a relationship there's often:

  • the worrier…and the one who thinks there’s no need to worry (or show he’s worried)
  • the talker (about the relationship, feelings, the future, etc)…and the one who doesn’t like talking
  • the sociable one...and the one who likes time on his own

Maybe you recognise yourself and your partner in this or can think of other ways in which you both are different. One of the secrets of a happy relationship is learning how to deal with these differences - especially if being in love makes you want to be the same, not different. The trick is finding a balance both can live with and sharing any stress. Later you’ll see examples of how different ways of handling things can cause problems - and how to get over this.

“He does things differently – if only he could be more like me!”
